
First off the necessary info:
Basil requires a minimum temp of 12-15 deg C and grown as annuals, all are worthy of growing as ornamentals. Seed is best sown spring at a temperature between 13-20 deg C. Direct sow May onwards (UK). Used fresh, stored dried or frozen. Ideal companion plant for Tomatoes is thought to be a deterrent for pests and diseases. Grow basil in pots on the windowsill, patio, in the herb garden, scented garden or flower borders. New Basil Puck bred specifically as a pot herb.

Basil Anise - Ocimum basilicum - Similar to Licorice Basil
Basil Anise has decorative purple tinged foliage and pale pink flowers. Has an aroma of liquorice. The seed stalks can be used for decoration, the leaves are excellent in sauces with fruit, juices, teas and salads adding their own flavour.
Basil Ararat
Striking foliage of dark green with purple markings. Basil Ararat has a sweet flavour, with a hint of liquorice. Ideal in salads, tomato dishes, a spice, and as a garnish.
Basil Bush - O.basilcum minimum
Needs warmth and shelter, grows well under glass/polytunnels. Basil Bush is a small leaved variety, much used in Italian cooking. The flavour increases when cooked. Soothing to the stomach.
Basil Cinnamon - Ocimum basilcum
A vigorous plant from Mexico with a distinct flavour and a strong cinnamon aroma. Basil Cinnamon is superb in salads, with vegetables and in soups. A very ornamental herb.
Basil East Indian - Ocimum Gratissimum
Basil East Indian a large, robust variety with felt like grey-green leaves. Strong clove scent and spicy flavour. An antiseptic, aromatic herb that repels insects, used medicinaly headache, fevers, rheumatism. Culinary, a tea can be made from the infused leaves and used for flavouring.
Basil Genovese Special Select FT™ - Ocimum basilicum 'Special Select'
Sow Spring/Anytime - Culinary and aromatic herb. Large-leaf type from the Genoa area of Italy, the pesto capital of the world. This strain is grown for the very best pesto in Italy. Its flavour and scent are not contaminated by overtones of 'mint' found in standard varieties. Bright-green colour. Tested for Fusarium oxysporum

Basil Greek is an improved bush Basil, compact strain with tiny leaves. Makes an excellent pot plant.
Basil Green Globe - O.basilcum minimum
A much improved bush type, producing compact small, round bushes approx 70cm across height 40cm. Good strong flavour. Basil Green Globe is an excellent ornamental in pots and borders.
Basil Holy Green - Ocimum sanctum - Basil Sacred, Tulsi
Basil Holy, Sacred to the Hindu God Vishnu. Musky aroma low growing bush. Used in salads, cold dishes, in Thai cooking for stir fry with red hot chillies and meat dishes including pork chicken and beef.
Basil Holy Red - Ocimum sanctum
As above. The leaves of Basil Holy Red have a reddish purple tinge and deep purple stems. Culinary herb.
Basil Italian Large Leaf - Ocimum basilcum
High yielding sweeter pesto variety. Medium dark green leaves up to 10cm long on a large plant of 60-90cm tall. Ready in approx 80 days. Sweeter tasting and less clove like than Genovese. Culinary herb.
Basil Lemon - Ocimum citrodorum - Indonesian Kemangie
Bushy habit with citrus-scented leaves, ideal in tea and for flavouring meat, fish dishes and potpourri. Basil Lemon seeds are also lemon scented.
Basil Lettuce Leaved - Ocimum basilicum
Basil Lettuce Leaved a large leaf variety, excellent for pasta sauce and a distinctive flavour and clove scent. Ideal for lining salad cups.
Basil Lime - Ocimum americanum
Similar in habit to Lemon Basil but with a zesty lime aroma. Basil Lime is ideal in salads and fish dishes.
Basil Marseillais - Ocimum basilicum
Marseillais the best stock of the true Basil, bush variety.
Basil Mrs Burns
Larger leaved and more robust than lemon basil, with a lovely lemon flavour and aroma. Use with fish, vegetables, salads, sauces, dressings.
Basil Napoletano - Ocimum basilicum
Lettuce leaf variety with frilly leaves and spicy traditional basil flavour. Leaves up to 10 cm long and tend to be a lighter colour than other pesto varieties, excellent variety for eating raw.
Basil Nufar - Ocimum basilicum
Basil Nufar. Fusarium wilt resistant basil. A large leaf variety ideal for borders, herb gardens, fields, greenhouse and hydroponic growing. Sweet scent and flavour. 77 days to maturity.
Basil Puck - O.basilcum minimum
Basil Puck is bred specifically for pot production, grow on a windowsill, it combines a condensed habit with the culinary qualities of basil Genovese

Basil Red Rubin has very ornamental deep purple bronze leaves of outstanding taste and aroma.

Basil Siam Queen
Basil Siam Queen. A really outstanding strain of Thai Basil with dark green leaves and deep purple flower stems. Excellent spicy, anise/liquorice aroma and flavour and an excellent ornamental pot, border plant.
Basil Spice
Basil Spice very distinctive with dark green slightly hairy leaves which are very aromatic. Long stems of pink flowers which are very decorative when dried.
Basil Sweet Genovese - Ocimum basillicum
Basil Sweet Genovese is the most commonly grown variety, taller with larger leaves, uses in salads especially with tomatoes, pasta sauces, combines well with garlic. Requires a sunny sheltered position. By removing flowering shoots the plant will produce more shoots which will increase the harvest of leaves. Basil Sweet Genovese is excellent to grow alongside tomatoes for a companion plant.
Sweet Salad™ Basil - Ocimum basillicum
A Medium leaf variety, excellent for fresh use in salads, pesto's, on tomatoes, and added at the last minute to soups. The flavour is mild and sweet, with a spicy cinnamon-clove note that gives this basil an elegant twist. This is possibly the leading variety for dried leaf production.
Basil Thai - Ocimum basillicum
Basil Thai a dwarf anise type can be grown as a pot herb indoors, can be used as a vegetable and in curries. The main variety used in Vietnamese and Thai cooking.
